Prevent avoidable delivery-day problems
Driveway Dumpster Placement Guide
A clear rectangle on the driveway is not enough. The truck needs an approach, overhead clearance and room to set the container down, while the property needs a surface and location suitable for the loaded weight.

Quick answer
Prepare the surface, approach and pickup route
Choose a firm, level private area; clear vehicles and equipment; check overhead wires and branches; protect access to doors and garages; and preserve the truck route until pickup. Send photos when any part of the approach is tight or sloped.
Surface
Inspect the driveway before the container arrives
Look for existing cracks, soft asphalt, unsupported edges, decorative pavers and underground structures. A loaded container can be much heavier than an ordinary parked vehicle.
Boards may be placed under contact points to reduce direct contact, but they cannot repair a weak surface or guarantee against damage. Photograph the area and discuss concerns before delivery.
- Avoid visibly damaged or sinking sections.
- Identify septic, drainage or underground features.
- Keep clear of unsupported driveway edges.
- Ask before choosing gravel, lawn or soft ground.
Truck route
Think beyond the final bin footprint
The roll-off truck needs room to approach, align and leave. Tight turns, narrow gates, parked cars and construction materials can block delivery even when the bin itself would fit.
Walk the route from the street to the placement area. Check the route again before pickup because a full bin cannot be moved around obstacles by hand.
- Street access and turning room.
- Gate and driveway width.
- Parked vehicles on both sides of the approach.
- Material piles, scaffolding and contractor equipment.
Above and around
Check wires, branches, eaves and doors
Overhead hazards are easy to miss from ground level. Look for utility wires, mature branches, low eaves and signs. Keep the container away from anything that could interfere with the delivery mechanism.
Consider how people will use the site after placement. Preserve a safe walking route and enough space for the container door when the available model has one.
- Overhead wires and cables.
- Tree canopy and temporary decorations.
- Garage doors and building overhangs.
- Pedestrian routes and emergency access.
Permission
Keep private placement separate from public occupation
Confirm where private property ends. A boulevard, sidewalk, public lane or roadway may require municipal permission even when it looks connected to the driveway.
Toronto specifically lists disposal bins in roadways or public laneways under its Street Occupation Permit process. Other municipalities have their own rules; check the correct authority before delivery.
- Mark the proposed location in a photo.
- Verify property boundaries when uncertain.
- Apply early if public space is necessary.
- Keep permits available for the required period.
Local delivery planning
Use this guide in your Ontario service area
This page applies to customers planning work in the Greater Toronto Area and confirmed Southern Ontario service areas. The same material, access and timing checks are useful across the region, but delivery is never automatic: the exact address, material, route, container inventory and requested date must be confirmed before booking.
Use the relevant city page for local service context, then call 905-781-1431 for the actual availability check.

Frequently asked questions
Do boards guarantee that a dumpster will not mark a driveway?
No. Boards may reduce direct contact, but the existing surface condition and loaded weight still matter. Discuss cracks, soft asphalt and decorative surfaces first.
How much space does the truck need?
It needs more than the final bin footprint. Send photos and measurements of the approach, overhead clearance and placement area for confirmation.
Can a bin be placed on the street?
Public-space placement may require municipal permission. Toronto requires a Street Occupation Permit for a disposal bin in a roadway or public laneway.
